Why bigger BREASTS are better
Posted: May 22, 2008
Women with full, shapely breasts are said to be confident, sexy and attractive especially to the opposite sex. Due to genetics, some women (those belonging to Asian race for example) are born with small and/or flat breasts that direly affect their well being, as a result, giving them poor body image and low self esteem.
If you are dissatisfied with your breast size and you desire for fuller and shapely breasts like your favorite movie stars or simply you want to enhance your body contour, then BREAST AUGMENTATION is for you. Also known as Mammoplasty, this cosmetic procedure can also benefit women who lose breast volume after weight reduction or pregnancy.
Besides improving breast size and shape, breast augmentation can also correct problems such as breasts that are not proportion in volume or size (meaning one breasts is smaller or bigger in size than the other), and change in breast size after a breast surgery. The best candidate for this procedure should be physically healthy with realistic expectations. Nursing or pregnant women and those who have existing malignant or pre-malignant cancer of the breast are not suitable. Parental consent, however, is required for patients under the age of 16. “I advise minors to wait until they reach the age of 16 because maximum breast shape and size are usually formed at this age. Who knows by then she’ll realize that she may not need surgery at all.”
Consultation
Before you go ahead with the surgery, Dr. Firmalino will initially evaluate your suitability for breast augmentation. To do this, he will take photographs for your medical record, examine and measure your breast’s size, shape and skin quality. He may also ask for your previous and current mammogram (or breast x-ray) and biopsies results. He will also ask you about any medications you are currently taking and any health conditions you have.
Should you qualify, he will discuss to you in detail the procedure including the type of implant, location of incision, type of anaesthesia that will be used, as well as its likely outcomes, risks and complications, etc. He will also give you instructions on how to prepare for your surgery, among others.
“The choice of implant filler, implant size and shape should be based on your desired breast size, your breast anatomy and body type or figure. Surgeons should also take into consideration the patient’s goal, lifestyle, job and personal preferences,” Dr.Firmalino stresses.
Procedure
The surgeon will make a single incision in the crease below the breast, in the armpit, or around the lower edge of the areola, and then inserts a saline-filled or silicone-gel filled implant between the breast and the chest muscle or behind the chest muscle. Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue, skin adhesives or surgical tape to close the skin. Surgery normally lasts up to 2 hours per breast and is performed in the hospital under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, which may or may not require overnight stay. After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped with an elastic bandage for support and protection. The surgeon may also put a small, thin tube under the skin to help drain some of the excess blood or fluid. Before you return home you will also wear a surgical bra to help minimize swelling and hold your new breasts in the correct position. You will also be advised regarding wound care, bra selection and follow up care instructions.
Post Surgery and Recovery
Expect swelling, tenderness, bruising and some pain and discomfort so it is important that you take the medications prescribed to you to alleviate you with these discomforts. You will be asked to go back to the clinic after 7 days for the removal of stitches, but continue wearing the surgical bra around the clock for a few weeks until the bruising, swelling and marks are gone. Stretching of the arms for 7 days is strictly prohibited. You can go back to work and resume light activities within 7 to 10 days. You will also be instructed to avoid sex for at least 2 weeks because sexual arousal can cause prolong swelling. Avoid strenuous activities such as exercise and contact sports for at least 6 weeks. Swelling, bruising or skin discoloration normally subside after 1 to 2 weeks. Incision lines will fade over time as your healing progresses. Our surgeon and staff will contact you from time to time to monitor your healing and post surgery recovery progress. Final outcome can be seen within three to four weeks.
Possible risks and complications
May include asymmetry, infection, scarring, bleeding, blood clots, loss of sensation, altered nipple sensation, delayed wound healing, but these can be reduced and/or avoided if you follow Dr. Firmalino’s instructions closely before and after surgery.
For optimal results, Breast Reduction is usually done alone or at the same with Breast lift, Nipple and/or Areola reduction.
