Nipple Reduction and Areola Reduction

Posted: June 30, 2008

Your long, droopy NIPPLES and large or puffy AREOLA can make even your perfect shape breasts look old and attractive.

You want to know why they look like that? Heredity plays an important factor on the size of your nipples. Other factors that can result to the increase in the size of your nipples and areola include stretching of the tissue due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, breast implants and weight gain.

Whether your problem is your nipple or your areola or both…Worry no more, Nipple Reduction or Areola Reduction is the solution for you.

NIPPLE REDUCTION OR AREOLA REDUCTION is a surgical procedure which aims to reduce the size of your nipples or areola to complement your breast size for a balanced look.

Consultation
Before you go ahead with the surgery, Dr. Firmalino will initially evaluate your suitability for Nipple Reduction or Areola Reduction. To do this, he will take photographs for your medical record. If you are qualified, he will discuss to you in detail the procedure including the type and location of incision, type of anaesthesia that will be used, as well as its likely outcomes, risks and complications, among others. He will also give you instructions on how to prepare for your surgery, among others.

Procedure
Nipple Reduction
: The size of the nipple is reduced via small incision on the nipple starting from the end or by removing a section of outer skin from the base of the nipple.

Areola Reduction: The size of the areola can be reduced via small incision around the perimeter of the areola.

On an outpatient basis, either of these procedures is done in the clinic under local anesthesia, which normally takes an hour or less to finish.

Post Surgery and Recovery
Expect swelling, tenderness, bruising and some minor pain so it is important that you take the medications prescribed to you to alleviate you with these discomforts. You can go back to work after a day of rest or the next day following your surgery but you will be advised to avoid strenuous activities such as exercise and contact sports for 1 or two weeks. Our surgeon and staff will contact you from time to time to monitor your healing and post surgery recovery progress. Final outcome can be seen after 2 weeks.

Possible risks and complications
May include irregular shape for areola, scarring, change or loss of sensation and infection, but these can be reduced and/or avoided if you follow Dr. Fimalino’s instructions closely before and after surgery.

To achieve optimal results, Nipple Reduction or Areola Reduction can be done alone or at the same time. Either or both of them can be done together with Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, or Breast Reduction.
